The Mahabharat is India’s greatest epic. It tells us the story of the Pandavas. Did you know there is a connection between Mahabharat and Kedarnath? It is believed that it was the Pandavas who built the Kedarnath temple. There is a very interesting legend that explains the Mahabharat connection. Let us know more about this connection.
After the Kurukshetra war, the Pandavas wanted to atone for their sin of killing their relatives. So, they decided to pray to Lord Shiv. But Mahadev did not want to meet the Pandavas and he turned into a bull and hid himself to avoid meeting the Pandavas. The place where Shiv hid himself was Guptakashi or hidden Kashi, named so because the Lord hid himself here.
As the Pandavas searched for the Lord, Bheema spotted the bull and ran to grab it. Seeing Bheema come, the bull disappeared and its parts came apart, landing in different areas. The hump of the bull landed in the place, which would later be known as Kedarnath. The bull’s feet landed in Tunganath, the face in Rudranath, hair in Kalpeshwar, and the navel in Madhyameshwar. The five places together are known as Panch Kedar.
The Pandavas then saw this as a message from Lord Shiv. They built temples in these five places. The temple at Kedarnath was believed to have been built by the Pandavas. Another story says that the Pandavas prayed and Kedarnath for many years. They then got blessings from Lord Shiv and then went to heaven.
This story is a folk legend and is very popular in Uttarakhand. The Mahabharata of Vyasa does not contain this story, but it has become popular over the ages and is believed by devotees.
