Legend says that Vishnu visited the place that is known as Badrinath today. He sat here in meditation for a very long time not caring for the cold weather. Seeing him seated in the cold region, Goddess Lakshmi became a Badri tree (Ber vruksh) and protected the Lord from the inclement weather. This is how the place got its name.
Badrinath was also the place where the great sages Nara and Narayana had their ashrama. Sons of Dharma, the two sages prayed here for many years. Later on the two sages were reborn on earth as Arjuna and Krishna. They setup a total of five ashramas known as pancha badri – Badrinath, Adi badri, Bridhabadri, Yoga Dhyana badri, and Bhavisha Badri.
The temple at Badrinath is believed to have been established by Adi Sankara. The great philosopher stayed here for six years. He would spend six months at Badrinath and the other six months at Kedarnath. The present temple was built by the Garhwal king in the 16th century.
